Is Your Robina Friend A MYOB Bookkeeper?

Question: Is that friend of yours living in Robina who’s said they can help out with your MYOB bookkeeping an experienced bookkeeper?

We’ve had a couple of calls from “friends of small business owners” wanting us to teach them to use MYOB.

Certainly we can train people to use MYOB, but we need to clarify a couple of points, to ensure that we are achieving the desired result.

The first question we ask is, why do you want to learn MYOB Accounting software?

“I want to help a friend out, so I want to learn MYOB!” was the response. That’s great, but what do you know about bookkeeping?

“Oh, I’m not a bookkeeper, I just want to help my friend with MYOB, I don’t want to do bookkeeping – I just want to use MYOB!”, was the reply.

Can you start a bookkeeping business just by getting some MYOB training? Are there some shoppers in Robina really that dumb to think they can use an escalator for their motorised scooters or wheelchairs?

Is this why the Robina Town Centre Management placed this sign at the bottom of the escalators?

Sign reads:
“For your safety
Please use lifts for strollers, prams and trolleys
No Motorised Scooters or Wheelchairs”

It’s because of people wanting to “help their friends” that the government has introduced legislation to tighten up the bookkeeping profession.

Why do people think that by learning to use an accounting software program, they suddenly become bookkeepers?

Are we reaching the stage where MYOB should place a warning on the box that users of the software will not automatically become bookkeepers?

The tradegy of this situation is that the friend now believes that they have a competant bookkeeper doing the bookwork for their business.

Really, that’s like you saying that you can run a restaurant because you ‘ve cooked breakfast for the family at home.

We’ve seen the devastation caused by wanna-be bookkeepers “helping out a mate”and actually causing more harm than good in recording their financial affairs

There’s a whole lot more to being a bookkeeper than using MYOB software. So if you think you can start a bookkeeping business just by getting some MYOB training, then think again.

BAS [Business Activity Statements] Due 2 March 2010

Business Activity Statements BAS due 2 march 2010 Robina, Varsity Lakes, Reedy Creek and Mudgeeraba, Gold Coast, Australia

Business Activity Statements BAS are due on 2 march 2010 for businesses that report their GST obligations quarterly

With the Christmas holiday period over for many small businesses, it’s time to get all your paperwork together and get it to your bookkeeper or outsourced bookkeeping service- to report on the 2nd quarter (1 September to 31 December 2009) to get your BAS lodged on time.

Maybe the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) does have a heart, after all. Rather than asking for lodgements on 28 January, they automatically give everyone an extension to the BAS lodgements to 28 February. This is, of course, a Sunday. However, the next business day is not Monday, since it’s a public holiday in Western Australia. Thus the Q2 BAS is due on 2 Mrach 2010

However, don’t be fooled by their grace, because there is NO WAY that they’ll consider granting an extension after that date. So you need to ensure that you have your Business Activity Statement lodged by 2 Mrach 2010
